13/02/2023 – Paypal Estimate Scams

We’ve received a few of these new scams recently.

They work by the scammer creating a Paypal Estimate. These have a legitimate use and come from Paypal themselves. It’s possible that they could even mimic a large, well-known company with their name and logo.

The scammer creates an Estimate for a few hundred dollars (all have been in USD so far) and sends to hundreds or thousands of emails hoping that at least one will be tied to an active Paypal account.

It will then appear in your Paypal account and it’s very easy to accidentally click the Pay button at which point your Paypal account will be debited the amount.

Alternatively the scammers include a phone number for any queries from the wary. This goes through to their own call centre and they will then try to get you to download a remote access tool to your computer to access your personal data and steal logins and bank account details.

If you are not expecting a Paypal estimate then just delete it. Don’t click on any links or reply to any emails.

If you have any questions please contact us for assistance.
